[That is not a good lead-in, Peter.]

Oh you know, alien acid. I was super spooked for a minute but it’s a lot more realistic and not face-melty.
But now I can’t put my suit back on until I get it out, bleh.
no subject
Wait nevermind, just bring it over.
no subject
[Peter oh my god.
But he will be coming, looking so totally innocent and civilian as he knocks at the door. He may or may not have a limp and he may or may not have a bandage on one arm, and maybe some light burns on his forehead or cheek. But he’s smiling and bright!! And not at all anxious about the frizzled suit in his backpack!!]
no subject
Don't freak out, huh?
[At least that manages to come out deadpan.]
no subject
C’mon, Mr. Stark, I’ve had way worse! It’s just a few burns, and I heal so fast anyway...
[He’s actually talking about the whole Vulture thing, which on second thought isn’t a very good example, because he definitely didn’t tell him about the unpleasant injuries associated with that battle on the beach. But hey, he’s been Spider-Man for long enough to rack up some damage. At any rate, he forces himself not to hobble on his burned ankle so he can put his backpack on the table.]
A crazy alien lady with acid arms drank too much.
I think her husband cheated on her? Or wife?
... There was a language barrier.
no subject
And you got looked at, right? Properly?
[Which is not at all hypocritical of him, because Peter is not him. Don't question it.]
So let's see the damage.
no subject
And it's already getting better, too.
[With a sigh, though, he unrolls the suit. It's really not too beat up, but one of the sleeves is definitely completely wrecked, as is a spot by the foot. The mask just has some minor holes on the top left that conveniently match the mild burns he's got on his face.
Peter just looks sheepish at the whole thing, like he spilled some water instead of battling an acid-flinging drunk alien.]
no subject
But with a shake of his head, he leans in to get a better look at the poor suit. At least it seems like it offered some kind of protection, which was really the goal here. There are already five ways of improving it floating through his head, but maybe Tony has learned something because he turns to glance at Peter first.]
So am I just fixing this or making upgrades?
no subject
Uh...! Upgrades like how? If you want to upgrade it. You don't have to if it's a lot.
[Peter hates inconveniencing people, okay.]
no subject
Better armoring, more functionality. I'm sure there's plenty of things I can find to do. You feel like there's anything missing?
no subject
[Hello, I am an ass-kisser, please don't steal my suit away in a paper bag again because I love it.
Oh man, this is so cool. He's actually, like, in the lab with Mr. Stark; he hasn't gotten to do that, had — uh, really barely got to talk to him after Germany (and we're not gonna talk about the rooftop conversation). But now there's this huge weight over his head that he should be on his best behavior, that he's definitely gotta keep up so he doesn't annoy him. He's the Smart Nerd. H'okay.]
... I was actually thinking more on expanding the distance the web shooters can reach, especially if I need to get up a really tall building faster; I'm already working on a 3.0 design for longer-lasting strength, but I don't really know how to get it to go from Point A to Point B faster, further.
no subject
Doesn't mean it can't be improved.
[He pokes a finger through one of the acid burns as an illustration. But he's listening as Peter babbles, his expression shifting to something more thoughtful.]
Like you're looking for better propulsion? Getting it to shoot farther?
no subject
Yeah! Like, it's a balancing act to try and juggle the threat of over-pressured canisters with the potential for more power behind the web being shot, you know? I don't wanna blow my hands off, but I also think there's definitely room for messing with the original recipe and creating an even more long-reaching design with just as much tensile strength.
I've just never really, uh, had the components for that... In my chemistry and robotics classes...
no subject
[Tony sounds almost distracted for a moment and turns to pull up a holographic window next to him.]
Kind of a tossup between making a stronger canister or changing the formula to be more lightweight. Or just a completely different mechanism completely.
[With a gesture, he pushes the window Peter's way.]
Feel free to give me your specs. Or any other specs you're thinking about.
no subject
He's not exactly as brilliant as Mr. Stark or anything, he knows, but he'll work on it. There's always room for getting better. So he doesn't hesitate to start tapping calculations that alter the current canister design.]
I don't think weight should be a problem, since I've got the enhanced strength. The ones I have now are practically not there, which I know was kind of what you were going for, right? Making suits as durable as possible while being as light as possible?
... But I can handle a little extra weight in the webshooters if it means cutting time to get where I need to be.
[............. And now a bit more uncertain, because he can't help but second-guess:]
Do you think so?
no subject
What does it matter what I think? It's your gear, you tell me.
[Sure he'd designed the suit, but that was because he had the time and the resources to manage something better than Peter's hold hoodie. He spreads his hands out a little as he gives Peter a look that's not quite puzzled.]
This isn't a test. I'm genuinely looking for feedback here, because if I tried to do what you do, I'd probably break a hip. So I can't know what works better for you.
[Well okay, he could probably map it and make some educated guesses. But that's not quite the same thing.]
no subject
[Oh my god, Tony's trusting him with this kinda thing. This is intensely beyond anything he's gotten to do with equipment like this (outside of, um, removing trackers and stuff, but we don't talk about that snafu). He nods more confidently.]
I can handle heavier webshooters, if it makes the webshooting distance longer.
[He taps in some calculations with a more steady hand.]
And maybe make have a way to adjust the eyes to darker tints instead of only just being able to slit, because there are certain times of the day where there's way too much light filtering through — it's not really that bad for other people, but it can be a really painful glare if I'm up high without any cover.
[Imagine looking towards the sun when you're swinging through the city, with dialed 11 senses, y'know?]
no subject
[And Tony's just got his arms folded now, watching Peter work things through with a look of faint bemusement. He's not entirely sure how they've ended up here, but it's not like Tony minds. Getting to work with someone with a different perspective is always a pleasure, and Peter's a quick kid.]
It's not really weight I'm worried about. You put more pressure into those things and eventually they're going to explode no matter what they're made of. Unless you happen to have some vibranium lying around.
no subject
Mr. Stark. Vibranium webshooters.
[Look what you're doing, you're putting things in his head.]
no subject
[Important engineering lesson -- gotta work with what you have. Or invent something new, but that's the advanced course.]
Why don't we try to look at something better than pressurized?
no subject
Something better than pressurized. There's something better than pressurized?
[And so, the brave young buck and older bundle of anxiety and beard have started a brave new trek for better spider suits. And here you thought this was gonna be just mending a sleeve, huh? This is gonna be a lot of used paper (don't even judge him for writing things down, he focuses better on paper).
... Either way, he's passed out at a desk covered in schematics in a few hours.]
